Heather Dyer

"Dyer writes with easy grace, which can be a feat for younger readers, and her style and ideas charmed me immediately.” PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Heather Dyer.jpg

Heather Dyer has published a picture book and three novels for children seven to eleven years old. Her second novel, 'The Girl with the Broken Wing' was featured as one of Richard and Judy’s Best Children’s Books Ever in 2007, and 'The Boy in the Biscuit Tin' was nominated for a Galaxy Best British Books Award in 2008.

Heather grew up in North Wales, and local places inspired the settings for her stories. In 'The Fish in Room 11' Toby finds a mermaid with stringy hair living beneath the pier. In 'The Girl with the Broken Wing', an angel with dirty feet crash-lands on James and Amanda’s rooftop; a trip to Beddgelert is the first of many misadventures.

Heather does author events at schools, festivals and libraries, and she currently teaches an undergraduate course in Writing for Children at Bristol University. Further information about Heather and her books can be found on the Chicken House website at www.doublecluck.com.

CHILDREN'S STORY WRITING WORKSHOP
Books by Heather Dyer

Heather will be leading the Children's Story Writing Workshop at The Hill in Abergavenny, Wales on the weekend of 5 - 7 December 2008.

Want to write fiction for children? Learn techniques for developing character, plot and style, and receive feedback on your writing in a supportive group environment. The course will include an overview of the market with a view to getting published.'

I  have published a picture book and three novels for 7-11 year olds. The weekend will include 'getting to know each other' activities, talking about what inspires us, and how best to exploit our creative sides. We will do writing exercises for developing character/plot/tension/setting, etc., and people are encouraged (but not obliged!) to read aloud to the group. People would also be invited to submit up to 1000 words of their own work (which they might have written previously) upon which I will give them personal feedback, if they wish.
