Write Like An Author

We asked our Featured Author to set a writing exercise to help budding authors to write like a professional author.

This month, our Featured Author Fred Covins has set a writing assignment to inspire you and to develop your creative writing techniques.

Remember to send us your work to be exhibited in the Budding Author's Gallery.  Click here to view our submissions guidelines.

Exercise:

Get a chair, a notebook and a pen. Sit yourself by a window and look out.  Write down everything you can see: people, birds, animals, trees, plants, flowers and buildings.  Now, using these things, write a story giving voices even to the non-humans, for instance, a tree - "Hey! There's a kid looking at me from that window, I think he's writing something, come on branches make us look interesting. Now what's the matter with him, he's stopped writing and staring open-mouthed. Wave to him twiglets, oops!  Now what's happened to him, he's disappeared...no...he's back again, I think he fell off his chair when you waved!"
